How cold will it be in Lapland?

Lapland is above the Arctic Circle where temperatures are often well below freezing. In December daytime temperature is normally around 0 to -20 degrees. Please ensure that you bring suitable clothing, including hats, gloves, scarves, warm layers and thermals. Young children are particularly vulnerable to the cold weather conditions; therefore we do not recommend any of these trips for children under 3 years of age. Most trips come with thermal outer suits to protect you from the extreme temperatures – check you package when booking.

What is the weather like in Lapland?


Lapland only has an average of 5 hours of daylight a day known as "grey light" - this is generally between 10am and 3pm - The rest of the time is like night time. Daytime temperature is normally around 0 to -20 degrees but it can fall to -40 in extreme conditions.

Where is Lapland?

Did you know that Lapland is not actually a country in itself, but is in fact made up of regions in Northern Finland, Sweden and Norway, all located inside the Arctic Circle? Lapland is traditionally the home of nomadic reindeer herders and of course Lapland's most famous resident… Santa Claus!

Can I see the Northern Lights in Lapland?

During your Lapland holiday you may be lucky enough to see the spectacle that is the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis). Unique to the Arctic Circle, this is a natural display of red, green or blue lights flashing and shimmering across the sky, caused by distant solar activity. Can I ski in Lapland?

Yes. Skiing, snowboarding and cross-country skiing are available in the majority of our featured Lapland resorts. What airports can I fly from to Lapland?

There is a selection of flights from regional airports when you travel to Lapland on a 3 or 4 day trip. Flights are non-stop to Saariselkä’s own local airport of Ivalo which is a short and easy 25-minute transfer. Regional airports include London Gatwick, London Luton, London Stansted, Southampton, Bournemouth, Exeter, Bristol, Cardiff, Birmingham, East Midlands, Manchester, Leeds Bradford, Norwich, Liverpool, Newcastle, Belfast, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh.
